Inside, you should find the Trezor device, a USB cable, a lanyard, and recovery seed cards. Verify that all contents are present. This initial physical inspection is a critical first layer of defense in your security protocol.

Now that you have verified the physical integrity of your device, it is time to bring it to life. Take the provided USB cable and insert the appropriate end into your Trezor device. Connect the other end to a USB port on your computer. Your Trezor screen should light up, displaying the Trezor logo and a welcome message. This indicates that the device is receiving power and is ready for initialization.

It is important to use the cable provided in the box to ensure a stable connection, although high-quality data cables from other manufacturers will also work. Avoid using charging-only cables, as they do not transmit data and will not allow your computer to communicate with the device. Once connected, do not be alarmed if your computer does not immediately recognize the device as a standard drive; the communication happens through a specialized bridge or the browser interface which we will set up in the next step. Ensure your computer is free from malware by running a quick scan before proceeding, adding an extra layer of hygiene to your setup process.

To interact with your hardware wallet, you need the official interface software: Trezor Suite. Open your web browser and navigate to trezor.io/start. It is crucial that you type this address manually or verify the URL carefully to avoid phishing sites that mimic the official page. Download the Trezor Suite desktop application for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). While a web version exists, the desktop application is generally recommended for enhanced security and privacy.

Once the download is complete, install the application and launch it. Trezor Suite is designed to be your command center—a unified interface where you can manage your portfolio, send and receive funds, and configure device settings. Upon launching, the Suite will detect your connected device. If your device firmware is outdated, Trezor Suite will prompt you to update it. You will be prompted to choose a backup method. The standard backup is a 12 to 24-word recovery seed. This seed is the human-readable representation of your master private key. Conversely, if someone else gets your seed, they can access your funds without the device. Treat this step with the utmost seriousness. Ensure you are in a private place where no one else can see your screen or the device display, and that there are no cameras recording your actions.

Your Trezor device will now display a sequence of words one by one. Take the recovery seed cards provided in the box and a permanent pen. Write down each word exactly as it appears on the device screen, in the correct order. Do not type these words into your computer, do not take a photo of them, and do not save them in a password manager or cloud storage. Digital copies can be hacked; a physical piece of paper cannot be hacked remotely.

After you have written down all the words, the device will ask you to verify them to ensure you haven't made any mistakes. Confirm the words as prompted. Once verified, you have successfully backed up your wallet. Store your recovery seed cards in a secure location, such as a fireproof safe or a safety deposit box. Consider using a metal backup solution for protection against fire and water damage. Remember: Trezor Support will never ask for your recovery seed. Never share it with anyone.

Congratulations! Your Trezor is now set up and secure. The final step is to set a PIN code. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Choose a strong PIN that is not easily guessable (avoid 1234 or your birth year). You will need to enter this PIN on the device every time you connect it to a computer.

You can now enter the Trezor Suite dashboard. You will see accounts for various cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others. To receive funds, click on an account, select "Receive," and verify the address on your Trezor device screen. Always trust the device screen over what your computer displays. To send funds, simply paste the recipient's address and confirm the transaction details on your Trezor.
