Secure Your Digital Future with Trezor
Welcome to the gold standard of cryptocurrency security. You have taken the first step towards true financial independence. Follow this comprehensive guide to set up your device, secure your assets, and become your own bank.
Why You Made the Right Choice
Understanding the technology behind your new security device.
In an era where digital assets are becoming increasingly valuable, the security of your private keys is paramount. A Trezor hardware wallet is not merely a gadget; it is a sophisticated fortress for your digital identity. Unlike software wallets or exchange accounts that are constantly connected to the internet—and thus vulnerable to hacks, phishing, and malware—Trezor keeps your sensitive data offline, in what is known as "cold storage."
When you use a Trezor, your private keys never leave the device. Transactions are signed internally within the secure environment of the hardware, meaning that even if your computer is compromised by a virus, your funds remain safe. This isolation is the cornerstone of hardware wallet security. By choosing Trezor, you are opting for a device that has been battle-tested by security experts and trusted by millions of users worldwide since the inception of the industry.
Furthermore, Trezor empowers you with full ownership. The mantra "not your keys, not your coins" is a fundamental truth in the crypto world. With Trezor, you are not relying on a third party to safeguard your wealth; you are taking direct control. This guide will walk you through the process of initializing this powerful tool, ensuring that you can manage your portfolio with absolute peace of mind.
Offline Security
Your keys are isolated from online threats, keeping hackers at bay.
User Verified
Every transaction requires your physical confirmation on the device.
Transparent

PIN Protection
Advanced PIN mechanisms protect against unauthorized physical access.
Getting Started with Your Trezor
Follow these six essential steps to initialize your device securely.
Unbox and Inspect Your Device
Your security journey begins the moment you hold the package. Before you even open the box, take a moment to carefully inspect the packaging. Trezor devices are shipped in tamper-evident packaging designed to show visible signs if anyone has attempted to access the device before it reached you. Look closely at the holographic seals on the box. They should be intact, with no signs of peeling, tearing, or glue residue.
If the package appears damaged, or if the holographic seal is broken or missing, do not use the device. It is possible that the device has been tampered with. In such a case, please contact Trezor Support immediately for a replacement. Once you are satisfied with the integrity of the packaging, open the box. Inside, you should find the Trezor device, a USB cable, a lanyard, and recovery seed cards. Verify that all contents are present. This initial physical inspection is a critical first layer of defense in your security protocol.
Connect to Your Computer
Now that you have verified the physical integrity of your device, it is time to bring it to life. Take the provided USB cable and insert the appropriate end into your Trezor device. Connect the other end to a USB port on your computer. Your Trezor screen should light up, displaying the Trezor logo and a welcome message. This indicates that the device is receiving power and is ready for initialization.
It is important to use the cable provided in the box to ensure a stable connection, although high-quality data cables from other manufacturers will also work. Avoid using charging-only cables, as they do not transmit data and will not allow your computer to communicate with the device. Once connected, do not be alarmed if your computer does not immediately recognize the device as a standard drive; the communication happens through a specialized bridge or the browser interface which we will set up in the next step. Ensure your computer is free from malware by running a quick scan before proceeding, adding an extra layer of hygiene to your setup process.
Install Trezor Suite
To interact with your hardware wallet, you need the official interface software: Trezor Suite. Open your web browser and navigate to trezor.io/start. It is crucial that you type this address manually or verify the URL carefully to avoid phishing sites that mimic the official page. Download the Trezor Suite desktop application for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). While a web version exists, the desktop application is generally recommended for enhanced security and privacy.
Once the download is complete, install the application and launch it. Trezor Suite is designed to be your command center—a unified interface where you can manage your portfolio, send and receive funds, and configure device settings. Upon launching, the Suite will detect your connected device. If your device firmware is outdated, Trezor Suite will prompt you to update it. Always accept firmware updates, as they contain vital security patches and new features. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest firmware, which usually involves confirming the action on the device itself.
Create Your Wallet
With the software ready and firmware updated, you will now create your new wallet. In Trezor Suite, select "Create new wallet." The device will now generate a brand new, unique master private key using its internal random number generator. This process happens entirely offline within the device's secure element, ensuring that your keys are never exposed to your computer or the internet.
You will be prompted to choose a backup method. The standard backup is a 12 to 24-word recovery seed. This seed is the human-readable representation of your master private key. It is the single most important piece of information you will handle today. If you lose your Trezor device, this seed is the only way to recover your funds. Conversely, if someone else gets your seed, they can access your funds without the device. Treat this step with the utmost seriousness. Ensure you are in a private place where no one else can see your screen or the device display, and that there are no cameras recording your actions.
Secure Your Recovery Seed
Your Trezor device will now display a sequence of words one by one. Take the recovery seed cards provided in the box and a permanent pen. Write down each word exactly as it appears on the device screen, in the correct order. Do not type these words into your computer, do not take a photo of them, and do not save them in a password manager or cloud storage. Digital copies can be hacked; a physical piece of paper cannot be hacked remotely.
After you have written down all the words, the device will ask you to verify them to ensure you haven't made any mistakes. Confirm the words as prompted. Once verified, you have successfully backed up your wallet. Store your recovery seed cards in a secure location, such as a fireproof safe or a safety deposit box. Consider using a metal backup solution for protection against fire and water damage. Remember: Trezor Support will never ask for your recovery seed. Never share it with anyone.
Start Using Your Trezor
Congratulations! Your Trezor is now set up and secure. The final step is to set a PIN code. This PIN protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Choose a strong PIN that is not easily guessable (avoid 1234 or your birth year). You will need to enter this PIN on the device every time you connect it to a computer.
You can now enter the Trezor Suite dashboard. You will see accounts for various cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others. To receive funds, click on an account, select "Receive," and verify the address on your Trezor device screen. Always trust the device screen over what your computer displays. To send funds, simply paste the recipient's address and confirm the transaction details on your Trezor. You are now fully equipped to manage your digital wealth with the confidence that you are protected by industry-leading security. Welcome to the future of finance.
Uncompromising Security
Why millions trust Trezor with their life savings.
PIN & Passphrase
Beyond the standard PIN protection, Trezor offers an advanced Passphrase feature. This acts as a "25th word" to your recovery seed, allowing you to create hidden wallets. Even if someone finds your recovery seed, they cannot access your funds without this passphrase, which is never stored on the device.
Open Source Transparency
We believe that security through obscurity is a fallacy. Trezor's hardware and software designs are fully open-source. This allows independent security researchers and the community to audit our code, ensuring there are no backdoors or hidden vulnerabilities.
